How Concrete Driveway Installation Works

Step 1: Driveway Prep

First, we’ve got to get your property ready to have a driveway installed. This means demolishing the old driveway or clearing a path in raw land.

Next, a strip is graded to ensure proper drainage. Then, we install a gravel sub-base and compact it. Finally, we install a wire mesh that will create structural support for the concrete.

Step 2: Concrete Pouring

We begin to pour the concrete on the length of the driveway. At this time, our team lifts the wire mesh so it ends up in the middle of the concrete where it provides the most support.

After the concrete is all poured, we bull-float it, which is where we glide a long, flat blade of metal over the top to flatten it and push down bigger pieces of aggregate.

Then, the concrete has to sit until the water evaporates off the top. Next, we cut joints into the driveway that allow for expansion and contraction without cracking.

Step 3: Finishing

To finish the concrete driveway, we hand-smooth it with a trowel. We can do a broom finish at this point, too.

After a few days, we remove the concrete forms and make saw cuts. Under ideal conditions, the concrete needs a week to cure before cars can drive on it.

Optionally, concrete driveways can be sealed to protect them from water and deicers. This step can be done 24 hours after the concrete dries.
